Have you ever felt bad about your race or the way you look? Has anyone judge you by the saying really racist comments or seen anyone who has? In this response to literature writing I will be talking about Dana in the book,“Kindred” The theme I will write about is, To not feel bad about yourself or family, you are who you are and no one can change that !” Dana is the main character in the book and she has some kind of power that takes her back in time and all of those times she saves a white slave owner but at the end she kills him to help slaves be free and do something with their lives.

In the book,“ Kindred,” there are many examples when the slaves or their masters put each other or someone down. For example,“He don’t want no niggers round here talking better than him, putting freedom ideas in our heads,” this shows that slaves or people being oppressed don’t believe in themselves so that makes them take action to something they don’t want to do for example kill a white person because they feel life doesn’t matter no more, just because of all the prescriptions and stereotypes they hear around them and they believe it because their minds are weak and believe many things. Anyone has the power to transform that oppression.

One connection I have about my race and the way someone looks is when my friends mom was token from her home and ICE Police tried to deport her back to where she was born ( El Salvador). This shows how many people hate one race so they try to get them and make them feel bad. This reminds me of Kindred because the white people thought they were superior to the black people which is not true ! Everyone was created equal and no race is better than another race. Many people try to stop this oppression, it only takes one person to change it. Si Se Puede!

Another example from the book is when Rufus tells Dana this,“You Threaten me, Ill Threaten you. Without me, you’ll never find Kevin!” This shows that people with more power over other peoples sometimes threaten them for example. Sometimes rich owners see that workers need money and can’t really find jobs so they hire them and take advantage of them and not pay them what they deserve. This reminds me of Kindred because Rufus knew he had more power over anyone so he took advantage of all his slaves because he controls them and does whatever he wants showing no respect.

In conclusion my point of this writing is to show people that everyone is the same and there is no point of racism. Believe in who you are and don’t let anyone change that. Be whatever you want to be and be happy for your race and your freedom because thanks to our ancestors we are all free !

College-4-All

    Hello, My name is Oscar Cervantes and I really want to go to College-4-All. One reason I want to go to College-4-All is because I want to have some experience with college and know what it’s like being and learning there. I also want to know whats the difference between Middle School, High School and College. I have been in Berkly’s college and I like what I heard and seen. My brother who was a former UPA student that is now in Fremont CPAA in the 12th grade is now signing up for a college. I always have followed his good leading steps and this step I’ll definitely take.

   

    One adjective to describe me might be Captain. One reason why I’m known for this is because I am not a follower and do what I know will be good for me so I can be successful. Another adjective that can describe me might be Smart. All my grades from UPA have been a 3.50 or above. Right now I am getting a 3.75 but trying hard to do my work and everything I have to do to get a better grade. Another adjective I’m know for is for being athletic. I love playing soccer! I play for the UPA Soccer Boys Team and I’m the Captain in the team. Whenever I feel sad or mad I play soccer with my friends or brother at the park. If I have time to do anything I play soccer. That’s another reason why I want to go to college. I want to learn about the activities and programs they do, specially if they do soccer. I hope I go to a good college and play college soccer there and hopefully professional.

    One challenge I have going on is hanging out with people who say are my friends but end up my enemies. I try to avoid all that by just hanging out with my real friends who I know will always be there for me. Another challenge I’m going threw is living in Oakland in a very dangerous street. This affects me because I can’t do all the things I want to do because I’m worried something is going to happen or someone is going to do something. The ways I try to avoid danger is by not getting involved with all the bad things I know happens around me, but to play soccer, be with my real friends, and most important be with my family who I know will tell me to do good things and not the bad so I can be successful and accomplish anything I set my mind to.

Oppression Paragraph

Prescriptions that are commonly heard are: That if you drink alcohol you will have a good time, I think that you don’t have to drink to have a good time, I think you have to just have fun the way you really like and not what other people say. Another prescription I heard about smoking is that if you are angry or sad you can smoke, and your nerves will calm down and will make you feel better. The system of alcohol and drugs is oppressive because many people believe what other people say but that is actually bad for them and will hurt them later on. Alcohol and drugs restricts people’s lives by maybe sometimes can get addicted and it will be hard for you to live without it and might hurt you very badly.

    Our community would be more peaceful knowing they wont be as many drunk drivers in the streets and have a possibility to run someone over.People would even smell better and not smell like alcohol or weed or anything, they’ll smell good. People would also feel better that they can do more activities and feel happier. Our community also need more community programs so teen can know whats good and whats bad so they can to the good and stay away from the bad. Overall everyone will feel safer.

Freedom Poem

There are words like FREEDOM,

But also dark words like,

Oppression or Exploitation

Chains and Shackles

Making them, the oppressed feel like a caged bird, Slaves can do much work, But wont get paid the thing they deserve

There are words like LIBERATION,

That make me feel,

Free like a free bird,

Spreading its wings and flying through the air, Free from the cage of being exploited and treated like if I didn’t exist
